Google’s “Open” AI models, Gemma, is growing.

During Google I/O 2025 On Tuesday, Google pulled out the wrappers from Gemma 3N, a model designed to run “smoothly” on phones, laptops and tablets. Available in the preview by Tuesday, Gemma 3n can handle sound, text, images and videos, according to Google.

The models are effective enough to run off connection and without the need for cloud calculation have gained steaming in the AI community in recent years. Not only is they cheaper to use than large models, but they maintain privacy by eliminating the need for data transfer to a remote data center.

During a central point in I/O, the product manager Gemma Gus Martins said that Gemma 3N can run on devices with less than 2GB of RAM. “Gemma 3N shares the same architecture as Gemini Nano and is and is designed for incredible performance,” he added.

In addition to Gemma 3N, Google releases Medgemma through the Health AI Developer Foundations program. According to the company, Medgemma is the most capable open model for the analysis of health -related text and images.

‘Medgemma [is] us […] Collection of open models for multimodal [health] Understanding the text and image, “Martins said.” Medgemma works extremely in a range of image and text applications so that developers […] They can customize models for their own health applications. ”

Also on the horizon is Signmma, an open model for translation of sign language into oral text. Google says that Signmma will allow developers to create new applications and integration for deaf and hard users.

“Signmma is a new family of models trained to translate sign language into a spoken language text, but it is better in American sign language and English,” Martins said. “It is the most capable model of understanding of the sign language and we can never wait for you-programs and deaf and hard communities-take this institution and build with it.”

It is worth noting that Gemma has been criticized for the usual, non -standard licensing terms, which some developers say have made models commercially a dangerous proposal. This has not discouraged developers from taking Gemma models tens of millions of times collectively, however.
