As Rivian begins to accept orders for the 2026 four -four engine and SUV, customers can initially entice the power and tricks that the four engines can unleash into these restarted UN.

After all, four engines that provide a combined 1,025 hp and 1,198 pounds-torque-and the ability to accelerate from one stop to 60 miles per hour in less than 2.5 seconds-is difficult to ignore.

But they should also pay attention to the software.

“Quad is really the culmination of all that Rivian has done so far,” said Wassym Bensaid, head of the company’s software, at TechCrunch, quickly providing a punch for acceleration, speed, torque and the estimated 374 miles. “Now that we have full engines. We have complete control over the stack, hardware and software.”

This check has allowed Rivian to introduce many new features, which will be released through software updates to Quad-Motor this September. (Customers can order the Quad-Motor Trim that starts today with traditions starting next week, according to the company.)

The feature that will probably inspire most of the Tiktok videos and the roles of Instagram is “Kick Turn”, a feature that adapts the power to the inner wheels and lets the vehicle turn around its center – even when moving. Kick Turn, which was tested by TechCrunch during a June drive unit, allows a vehicle traveling under 20 miles / hour to dirt to start its back and shake it to the right or left without moving the steering wheel. The idea is to give off-roaders the ability to make tight turns by pressing a button and without going through the tiring work of a three-point turn.

Rivian fans and followers may remember a promoted but never released, feature called “tanks. “Kick Turn, which controls the power and handle of the tire, is the real world and the Tank Turn.

The Kick Turn could still be abused if the driver stayed at the same spot and continued to turn the vehicle into a circle. However, Rivian has placed some software protectors in the feature, including speed limitation and allowing it only to rotate only dirt.

Second -generation review

Rivian first unveiled the second -generation four -generation four -generation engine during a May 2024 disc in Washington, in an attempt to show a revision of the R1 line flagship. This reboot touched every inch of its interior from the battery pack and the electrical architecture suspension system, interior seats, sensor stacks and software user interface.

The effort, which led the company to build more of its basics at home, aims to reduce the cost of construction and improve the performance and appeal of the HS.

Double and double mobilization deliveries have begun almost immediately, with the shaping of the three mobility after August 2024. Management, according to the company.

And the bets are high that Rivian gets the Quad-Motor right. Rivian’s long-awaited and cheaper R2 vehicles are not expected to be transferred to production by the first half of 2026. Rivian hopes that the new Quad-Motor, which will start between $ 125,990 and $ 115,990 depending on the vehicle investment, will give sales boost. And software is a crucial part of his offer.

If the four engines (one located on each wheel) are the heart of the second generation four -generation engine, the software is the brain that makes everything work together.

Bensaid highlighted the development of advanced torque and balancing algorithms introduced into the second generation square.

“Think of it as a super complex mathematical editing behind the scenes to allow real -time use and decisions based on information from the four wheels and then the four engines, obviously keeping the security guards,” he said.

What means in practice are numerous sensors in the R1S SUV and R1T truck, provide information on launch rate, address angles and other inputs, which are then powered on torque software models. In other words, Rivian’s hardware and software work in real time to distribute power to each wheel electronically.

The software meets the material

This allowed the EV manufacturer to introduce Kick Turn as well as other Software-Hardware-Motor-Motor functions, including “Rad Tuner”, which allows users to change the driving dynamics through the central touchscreen. Tuner Rad was developed by a group of engineers, software developers and designers called the “Rivian Adventure Department”.

The history of origin began several years ago, according to Bensaid.

“Every time we go and try and qualify for the software or car version, we have an engineering screen that is hidden with the secret code,” he said. It was here that Rivian’s first employee and chief engineer R2 Max Koff and chief engineer R1 Luke Lynch will form the car as they wanted – an exercise that often pushed the vehicles to new limits. “And this has evolved into this idea to make this receiver available to customers.”

With Tuner Rad, drivers can create their own custom driving function from scratch or build in defaults such as “Rally” or “Sport”.

“We really give users complete control through software so they can calculate their unique personality of the car,” Bensaid said, adding that this particular feature is really intended for expert drivers.

Bensaid emphasized that this is more than just a change in the user environment that allows drivers to pass with balance, stability and driving height.

“I think what is really important is technology behind it,” he said. “For example, this torque balance, the fact that we are able to configure this with a very simple regulator-this is chronic growth of mechanical development to have a very sophisticated torque algorithm with really a high-precision control that allows us to change prices while technically extremely difficult.”

The company also launches a launch launch feature, which uses an external camera registration to automatically record the “launch function”, which can break the new R1T Quad-Motor from a stop to 60 miles per hour in less than 2.5 seconds with a heart. Users can repeat the videos and watch real -time statistics, such as speed and distance coatings calculated by internal control software. Users can also export videos to a mobile device via USB port for storage and sharing.

Charging Nacs and many more

The 2026 R1T and R1S vehicles, including Quad-Motor, also come integrated with the North America charging standard, which was originally developed and spread by Tesla.

This gives the owners of the 2026 models access to Tesla’s huge Fast Chargers network, known as turbocharges. Rivian also provides Quad-Motor customers with free CCS DC adapter, which was the long-term EV charging standard, allowing them to connect to other networks.

As part of this hardware upgrade, the company has also updated its software, in particular the TRIP PLANNER programmer. Now when a customer opens the travel developer and selects a Nacs station, the information is updated to the travel developer to reflect that no adapter is needed.
