Waymo said on Wednesday that she has applied for permission to test her autonomous vehicles in New York, the first step of the alphabet company in a sticky regulatory process to bring her robbery to the largest US city.

Waymo applied for permission to the New York Ministry of Transport to take advantage of the Jaguar I-Pace vehicles with a human security operator behind the steering wheel in Manhattan. The autonomous demonstration or the New York test permit requires man to be able to take over. An insurance policy worth $ 5 million; and each test operator must be adequately trained in the safe operation of the test vehicle.

The law of New York is particularly prohibitive of autonomous vehicles. While obtaining a license would be remarkable, Waymo is far from being able to start commercial businesses in the city – or even try without a human security operator behind the steering wheel.

Waymo is also pushing forward and said he supports a change in state law that would allow a vehicle without people behind the steering wheel. The company is also trying to build goodwill in New York and the state, working with several organizations such as Madd NY, Yai, the National Federation of the Blind and the Bronx Community College.

Waymo told TechCrunch that he had positive conversations with legislators this year and hopes to continue to move on to regulatory changes. New York law states that every person operating with a motor vehicle must have at least one hand (or prosthetic) to the address mechanism at all times. Changing this wording will be the key to Waymo eventually being able to develop vehicles without a driver.

Other companies tried to try in New York before, including Mobileye and Cruise. But these efforts were never implemented beyond a few demonstrations or pilots.

Of course, New York has other challenges other than regulations. The city is a chock-a-block with cars, trucks, delivery trucks, bicycles, buses and, above all, people, all who stumble. San Francisco, one of the markets it operates today, is also a busy city with many of the same challenges. New York takes this complexity to a factor of 10.

Waymo has stolen the huge New York market for years. In 2021, the company now developed Chrysler Pacifica Minivans pensioners-the first self-guidance vehicles in its test fleet-to drive by hand and map Manhattan. The company then stated that each vehicle would have two people, one to drive another to the passenger seat to help direct the driver’s activity, monitor the software in the vehicle in real time, evaluate performance and log comments.

These vehicles never operated in autonomous operation, although they were all equipped with a fifth generation Waymo guide, which was the most today and advanced self-guiding system at that time.

For the past four years, Waymo has escalated in many other places. The company provides over 250,000 fully autonomous paid trips each week to several US markets, such as Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco.
