Mistral AI, the French company behind AI Assistant Le Chat and many fundamental models, is officially considered one of France’s most promising technology companies and is undoubtedly the only European company to compete with Openai. But compared to the valuation of $ 6 billion, its global market share is still relatively low.

However, the recent release of the assistant conversation at mobile app stores met with an advertising campaign, especially in its country of origin. “Go down and download Le Chat, which is done by Mistral, instead of Chatgpt by Openai – or something else,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in a television interview before the AI Action summit in Paris.

While this attention wave may be encouraging, Mistral AI still faces challenges in competition with Openai-and thus maintaining its confidence as “the greener and top independent AI laboratory”.

What is Mistral AI?

Mistral AI has increased significant amounts of funding since its creation in 2023 with the ambition to “put the Frontier AI in everyone’s hands”. While this is not an immediate jab at Openai, the slogan is intended to highlight the company’s defense for opening to AI.

Its alternative to Chatgpt, Le Chat, is now available on both iOS and Android. It reached 1 million shots in two weeks after its mobile release, even grabbing France’s top spot for free downloads to the iOS App Store.

This comes in addition to the Mistral AI model suite, which includes:

  • Mistral Large 2, the main large linguistic model that replaces Mistral big.
  • Pixtral bigIt was discovered in 2024 as a new addition to the Pixtral Multimodal Model family.
  • Mistral Medium 3, which was released in May 2025 with the promise of providing efficiency without ending up performance and better for STEM coding and work.
  • Devstral, an AI model designed for coding and openly available with Apache 2.0 license, which means that it can be used without restriction.
  • Codestral, a previous AI genetic model for code, but whose license banned commercial applications.
  • “Les Ministraux”, a family of models optimized for limbs such as phones.
  • Mistral Saba, focused on Arabic.

In March 2025, the company introduced the API Mistral OCR, an API of Optic Character Recognition (OCR) that can convert any PDF to a text file to facilitate the ingestion of AI models.

What are the founders of Mistral AI?

The three founders of Mistral AI share a background in AI survey in large US technology companies with major companies in Paris. CEO Arthur Mensch worked on Deepmind, Google, while CTO Timothée Lacroix and lead scientist Guillaume Lample are former Meta employees.

Co-founders also include Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve (also a member of the Board of Directors) and Charles Gorintin from the start of Alan Health Insurance, as well as former Digital Minister Cédric O. caused a dispute because of his previous role.

Mistral AI Open Source?

Not all that. Mistral AI differentiates its top models whose weights They are not available for commercial purposes, from its free models, for which it provides weight access under Apache 2.0.

Free models include research models such as Mistral Nemo, which was built in collaboration with Nvidia that the start open In July 2024.

How does Mistral AI win money?

While many of the Mistral AI offers are free or now have free levels, Mistral AI plans to drive some revenue from paid Le Chat levels. It was introduced in February 2025, the Le Chat Pro Plan is priced at $ 14.99 a month.

On the pure B2B side, Mistral AI delivers top models via APIs with use -based pricing. Businesses can also grant permission to use these models and the company is also likely to create a significant share of its revenue from its strategic partnerships, some of which underlined during the Paris AI summit.

Overall, however, Mistral AI’s revenue is still in the eight -digit range, according to multiple sources.

Which corporate relationships has closed Mistral AI?

In 2024, Mistral AI introduced an agreement with Microsoft, which included a strategic partnership to distribute AI models through Microsoft’s Azure platform and an investment of 15 million euros. The UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA) quickly concluded that the agreement does not qualify for research due to its small size. However, it also caused some review In the EU.

In January 2025, Mistral AI signed an agreement with the Agency France-Presse (AFP) service to let Chat ask the entire AFP text file dating back to 1983.

Mistral AI also secured strategic partnerships with France army and work agency; Giant of CMA ShipmentStarting German Defense Technology Punishment; Ibm; Orange; Saddle.

In May 2025, Mistral AI announced that it will participate in creation a campus AI in the Paris regionIn the context of a joint venture with the UAE MGX, NVIDIA and the State Investment Bank of France BPIFRANCE.

How much funding has Mistral AI increased?

Since February 2025, Mistral AI has increased around € 1 billion to date, about $ 1.04 billion with the current exchange rate. This includes some debt funding, as well as several rounds of equity funding that are increasing in close succession.

In June 2023, and before even its first models released, Mistral AI set a record of $ 112 million, led by Lightspeed Venture partners. Sources at that moment said the seed tour – The largest in Europe ever -In a one -month -old starting age at $ 260 million.

Other investors in this seed round included BPIFRANCE, Eric Schmidt, Exor Ventures, the first minute Capital, Headline, Jcdecaux Holding, La Famiglia, Localglobe, Motier Ventures, Rodolphe Saadé, Sofina and Sofina Xavier Niel.

Just six months later, it closed a series of 385m euros ($ 415 million at that time), with a reported valuation of $ 2 billion. The round was driven by Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z), with the participation of existing Backer Lightspeed, as well as by BNP Paribas, CMA-CGM, belief, Elad Gil, General Catalyst and Salesforce.

The convertible investment of $ 16.3 million made by Microsoft at Mistral AI as part of their partnership announced in February 2024 was presented as an extension of Series A, indicating an unchanged valuation.

In June 2024, Mistral AI then set 600m euros in a mixture of shares and debt (about $ 640 million in the exchange rate at the time). The long -term track was driven by General Catalyst with $ 6 billion valued, with remarkable investors such as Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation and others.

What could look like an AI Mistral output?

Mistral “is not for sale,” Mensch said in January 2025 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “Naturally, [an IPO is] the plan. ”

This makes sense, given how much startup has increased so far: even a great sale may not provide high enough multiple for its investors, so as not to mention the worries of sovereignty depending on the buyer.

However, the only way to climb the constant rumors of acquisition is to reduce its revenue to levels that could even justify the $ 6 billion valuation. Either way, stay tuned.
