Openai has launched the GPT-5, a new AI model to supply the company’s next generation chatgpt.

The GPT-5, released on Thursday, is Openai’s first “unified” AI model and combines the O-Series range of its models with the quick answers to the GPT series. The next-generation model marks a new era for Chatgpt-and its creator, Openai-showing Openai’s broader ambitions to develop AI systems that look more like agents than Chatbots.

While GPT-4 allowed AI Chatbots to provide smart answers to a wide variety of questions, the GPT-5 allows Chatgpt to complete a wide variety of users on behalf of users-such as creating software applications, navigation in a user’s diary or creating research newsletters.

With the GPT-5, Openai also tried to make chatgpt simpler to use. Instead of asking users to choose the right settings, the GPT-5 is equipped with real-time router that decides how to provide the best answer, whether it responds quickly to user questions or takes extra time to “think” through answers.

During an information with journalists, Openai’s chief executive Sam Altman claimed that the GPT-5 is the “best model in the world” and said it represented a “important step” along the company’s course for the development of AI that could overcome people in the most economically valuable work.

“Having something like the GPT-5 would be almost unthinkable at any previous time in history,” Altman said.

Since Thursday, the GPT-5 will be available to all free Chatgpt users as their default model. Openai Vice President Nick Turley said this is part of the company’s effort to give free users access to a Model of Logic AI for the first time. (Previously the company covered these most advanced models behind a paywall.)

“This is just one of the ways in which I am excited to live the mission, ensuring that these things really benefit people,” Turley said of the decision, citing long -term Openai shipment to distribute advanced AI to as many people as possible.

Expectations are high for GPT-5, one of Openai’s most expected launches, as Chatgpt put the company on the map in 2022. Since then, Chatgpt has evolved into one of the most popular consumer products in the world, reaching over 700 million users each week-designed by 10% of the population.

Many see GPT-5 as a bell for AI’s progress in general, and Silicon Valley’s reception of the model could have deep consequences for great technology, Wall Street and policy-makers that regulate technology. These interested parties are watching to see if the GPT-5 offers a major leap to the AI capabilities, as well as its predecessor, the GPT-4, which questioned expectations of what the software can do.

GPT-5 offers a small advantage in competition

Openai claims that the GPT-5 is last artificial in various areas, slightly exhausting the AI models from Anthropic, Google Deepmind and Elon Musk XAI at key benchmarks. However, the GPT-5 slightly underestimated AI Frontier models in other areas.

The company says the GPT-5 offers transformation performance around coding. Altman said the model is specifically superior to the rotation of entire software applications on request, what was known as “Vibe coding”.

Swe Bench was verified-a test of actual coding tasks pulled by the GitHub-GPT-5 scores 74.9% in his first attempt. This means that GPT-5 exceeds the latest Claude Opus 4.1 model 74.5%and Google Deepmind Gemini 2.5 Pro, which noted 59.6%.

Concerning the latest examination of humanity-a difficult test testing of the performance of the AI model in mathematics, humanities and natural sciences-a GPT-5 version with extensive reasoning (GPT-5 Pro) scored 42% when using tools. This is slightly smaller than XAI was able to succeed with the Grok 4 Heavy, which scored 44.4% in the test.

In the GPQA Diamond-a test of scientific questions at the doctoral level-the GPT-5 Pro recorded 89.4%in its first attempt, surpassed Claude Opus 4.1, which recorded 80.9%and Grok 4 Heavy, which recorded 88.9%.

Openai says GPT-5 is better for answering health-related questions. In a precision of testing to the AI model responses to health care issues, Healthbench’s harsh hallucinations, Openai says that GPT-5 (with thought) paid only 1.6% of the time. This is much lower than the company’s previous GPT-4O and O3 models, which recorded 12.9% and 15.8 respectively.

While AI Chatbots are not medical professionals, million people They use them for health tips. Responding to this phenomenon, the company says that the GPT-5 is more energetic for the signaling of possible health concerns and helping users analyze medical results.

In addition, Openai says that the GPT-5 is better than other AI models in more difficult, subjective areas such as creative design and writing. Turley said the GPT-5 responds more naturally and has a “better taste” than other AI models in creative duties.

“The vibes of this model are really good,” Turley said.

The GPT-5 is also more accurate than the previous Openai models and the company says it suffers much less than illusions-the tendency for AI models to counteract information-in comparison with the models of the O. It was happening.

In the answers to Chatgpt prompts, Openai found that GPT-5 (with thought) is paid and responded with incorrect information of 4.8% of the time. This is a significant decrease from O3 and GPT-4O, which score 22% and 20.6%, respectively, in the test.

At a reference point that measured the AI model’s ability to complete the simulated online tasks, Tau Bench, the GPT-5 offers mixed performance. In part of the test by measuring the ability of an AI to browse on an airline website, the GPT-5 scores 63.5%, slightly degraded O3, which recorded 64.8%. In another part of the AI ability to navigate to retail websites, the GPT-5 scores 81.1%, with a low performance of Claude Opus 4.1, which scored 82.4%.

Openai also says that the GPT-5 is safer than its previous models. While AI reasoning models occasionally show a tendency to design people or lie to promote their own goals, Openai found that the GPT-5 was misleading at a lower pace than other models.

Alex Beutel, a guide to Openai’s safety research, said that reducing deception improves not only GPT-5 safety but also user experience, creating a model that is more “transparent and honest in ways that users can trust”.

Beutel also notes that the GPT-5 is better in distinction between bad actors trying to abuse chatgpt and users who make harmless requests. As a result, the GPT-5 is able to refuse more dangerous questions, while also providing fewer rejects to users looking for harmless information.

Upgrades for consumers and developers

Chatgpt gets some user experience upgrades as part of the GPT-5 launch. Users can now choose from four new personalities in the Chatgpt setting: cynic, robots, listener and nerd. The company says they will customize Chatgpt’s answers without requiring users to specifically ask the model to respond somehow.

Subscribers in the ChatGPT drawing of $ 20 per month plus the plan receive higher use limits for GPT-5 by free users. Meanwhile, Subscribers PR $ 200 per month will have unlimited access to GPT-5, as well as a version called GPT-5 Pro that uses additional computing resources to produce better answers. Organizations in the Openai, Edu and Enterprise Plans team will gain access to the GPT-5 as their default model next week.

For developers, the GPT-5 comes to the API of Openai in three sizes-GPT-5, GPT-5-MINI and GPT-5-Nano-which will spend more or less “reasoning” time through tasks. Developers can also check Verbosity at API Openai, deciding how long or short AI’s model answers should be.

The GPT-5’s main model will cost $ 1.25 per million input brands (about 750,000 words, more than the entire “Lord of the Rings” series) and $ 10 per million production brands.

The launch of the GPT-5 comes after a busy week for Openai. The company has published an open model of reasoning, GPT-Russ, that developers and businesses can download free of charge and run to a fraction of costs. The open model fits almost the abilities of the previous top models of Openai, O3 and O4-MINI, but the GPT-5 sets a new standard for border performance in some areas, such as coding.

However, the GPT-5 appears to be about the same level as other AI Frontier models in several areas. The benchmarks, of course, only say part of the story about any AI model and it remains to see how developers will use the GPT-5 in the real world and if the model is really one step above the competition.
