Roblox Introduces New Assurances For Adolescents, Including Age Assessment Technology

Roblox announced on Thursday that new assurances are being launched for people who are between 13 and 18 years. The company introduces “reliable connections” to allow these users to be freely connected to people who know, along with age assessment technology, more privacy tools and ideas for adolescent parents.

Roblox has undergone fire in recent years on how it handles children’s safety. In April, Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier issued a summons to Roblox in response to reports that children were exposed to harmful material on the platform and that adult predators were able to send a message of minors to the application.

The changes announced on Thursday is likely to be part of Roblox’s efforts to calm both legislators and parents. The information focusing on adolescents comes eight months after Roblox on the protection of users under the age of 13.

Roblox renames “friends” to “connections” and begins “reliable connections” to allow teenagers to communicate more freely in conversation and voice with people they trust. With reliable connections, users can chat without filters.

“Users who define the system are 13+ will have access to more expressive conversations with their reliable connections,” said Ryan Ebanks, senior product manager at Roblox, in an information with reporters. “This additional freedom reduces the incentive for adolescents to carry out -of -platform interactions where they may be exposed to greater risk.”

Roblox notes that talks between reliable connections are monitored for critical damage (eg care). In addition, parents can see who their teenager is connected as a reliable connection.

To unlock reliable connections, users need to use the new platform assessment technology to verify their age by taking a selfie video. Must receive an estimate of at least 13 years to access reliable connections. Roblox notes that if the system is not able to verify age with high trust, their age will remain unconfirmed. If the user does not pass the age assessment, they can confirm their age by verifying identity.

Users 13 to 17 who have confirmed their age can add each other as a reliable connection. Non -filtered communication between users aged 18 years and older and adolescents is excluded unless a pre -existing real -life relationship is verified through a QR code.

The company plans to use age assessment throughout its platform to support user access to age -appropriate features and content.

As for the new privacy tools, teenagers can now decide who can see if they are online. They can define this to be visible only for their connections, their followers, no one, or everyone in Roblox. They can also specify a window during which Roblox is silenced.

Roblox gives parents access to a tool suite to understand the use and presence of their child on the platform. Parents can now see who their teenager is, as well as how much time their teenager spends on the platform and in what games. In addition, parents can choose to be notified when their teenager makes a specific transaction in Roblox.

“We know that parents are extremely busy and so we have designed them to be really fast with a look at knowledge that parents can hope to fit their busy timetables,” said Dina Lamdany, senior product manager in Roblox, in the update.
